You'd be hard-pressed to make an argument that the Monona Grove citumnomy is not invested in its schools, or isn't overwhelmingly supportive of what goes on in our schools, especially of teachers. Most bond referendums pass, eventually (MG has one of the highest debt loads in the state, evidence that taxpayers are willing to dig deep to support their schools). We fight passionately over things like where the middle school ought to be, and whether or not certain elementary schools should stay open or be consolidated, but most communities in Wisconsin would love to have the kind of interest in their schools that this one shows every day. Take a look at our schools they are well represented with parent volunteers every day, at all grade levels, because citizens believe their contributions are valued, especially by teachers. One other item that I hope our teachers are at least thinking about: everyone knows a referendum is coming down the pike, at some point, to maintain programming. Real, tangible things classes being under 30 students, instead of 35-40 students (at the high school; just switch the numbers accordingly for elementary and middle schools); fine arts programs; college-prep curriculum; extracurricular activities (sports like tennis and golf and swimming and track and cross country, where you don't have to be an A+ athlete to participate); field trips; after-school clubs; late busses to pick up and transport students to and from after-school activities; bus stops near your home (instead of half-a-mile away) are all jeopardized, at some point, without new dollars coming into the system. MG has been lucky, in some ways two substantial buckets of money have come from the federal government in the past few years, but that gravy train is ending. And the state budget situation is getting worse, not better. The continued success of the MG school district will rest in the very near future with its residents, and residents only, and most of the budget cutting that could come our way will fall on classrooms and into the laps of teachers.I hope they recognize this as they continue their outdated tactics.
