They now get almost 80% of their electricity from nuclear today, because it was the only source of cheap energy that they had available. As they explained at the time, in the seventies, just after the oil crisis: they had "no coal, no oil, no choice."So what future exactly are you "bootstrapping" to? Photovoltaics are not exactly new -- they've been around for half a century now, almost as long as controlled nuclear fission. Solar thermal has been around even longer than that. After all of this time, there are no ecmonoical solar plants. Every single one in the world produces a relatively tiny amount of electricity at an extremely high price.So is this future that "others" envision one in which energy costs are so high that these ridiculously expensive technologies finally become ecmonoical?!Sorry, but no thanks. I'd rather not bootstrap to there. |
